De Ball Wall Sconce is ontworpen met een draaibaar scharnier en een verstelbaar insteeksnoer, waardoor de lampenkap gemakkelijk kan worden verplaatst zonder deze opnieuw aan de muur te hoeven afstellen. In 1952 werd een set Zweedse hanglampen op de Amerikaanse markt geïntroduceerd, en George Nelson was zo onder de indruk dat hij er een voor zijn kantoor wilde hebben. Hun hoge prijs weerhield hem ervan er een te kopen, maar inspireerde hem ook om er zelf een te ontwerpen. Het resultaat was een serie lampen met elementaire, bolvormige vormen, zoals onder meer een ronde appel, een langwerpige sigaar en een mooi gevormde peer.
