Sodawater wordt gebruikt om lucht op te vangen in een oververhitte glasmatrix, die verticaal wordt uitgerekt en talloze keren tussen pinnen op zichzelf wordt teruggevouwen. Terwijl het glas afkoelt, verandert de vouwbeweging langs de korrel van de lus de ingesloten lucht in microfilamenten die het stuk een parelmoerachtige optische kwaliteit geven. Aan het ene uiteinde van de lus wordt een laagspanningsxenon- of LED-lichtbron geïntroduceerd die licht door de microfilamenten werpt en een zachte gradiënt registreert.
