De Akari-serie vloerlamp maakt deel uit van de Akari-lichtsculpturen. De ontwerper koos de naam 'Akari' voor deze objecten, een woord dat 'licht' betekent in het Japans en zowel verlichting als fysieke lichtheid oproept. De inspiratie voor het ontwerp van de Akari-lampen komt voort uit een bezoek aan het Japanse vissersdorp Gifu, waar hij de vissers aan het werk zag. Zij gebruiken niet alleen getrainde aalscholvers voor de jacht, maar ook lantaarns om vissen aan te trekken. Deze lantaarns hadden ribben van bamboe, die bedekt waren met fijn papier.
