El agua con gas se utiliza para atrapar aire en una matriz de vidrio sobrecalentada, que se estira verticalmente y se dobla sobre sí misma entre clavijas numerosas veces. A medida que el vidrio se enfría, el movimiento de plegado a lo largo de la fibra del bucle convierte el aire atrapado en microfilamentos que le dan a la pieza una calidad óptica nacarada. Se introduce una fuente de luz LED o de xenón de bajo voltaje en un extremo del bucle que proyecta luz a través de los microfilamentos y registra un suave gradiente.
