La inspiración para el diseño de las lámparas de mesa washi surgió de una visita al pueblo pesquero japonés de Gifu, donde se observaba a los pescadores faenando. Utilizaban cormoranes adiestrados para la caza, pero también faroles para atraer a los peces. La lámpara de mesa estaba hecha de bambú, cubierto con papel fino. Para la lámpara de mesa washi, el diseñador utilizó papel de morera, ya que suaviza la luz, haciéndola suave y distribuyéndola uniformemente.
