Die Stehleuchte der Akari-Serie ist Teil der Akari-Lichtskulpturen. Der Name „Akari“ bedeutet auf Japanisch „Licht“ und impliziert sowohl Beleuchtung als auch Leichtigkeit. Die Inspiration für das Design der Akari-Leuchten stammt von einem Besuch im japanischen Fischerdorf Gifu, wo die Fischer bei der Arbeit beobachtet wurden. Sie nutzen nicht nur dressierte Kormorane für die Jagd, sondern auch Laternen, um Fische anzulocken. Diese Laternen hatten Rippen aus Bambus, die mit feinem Papier bespannt waren.
